What Is An Active LED Video Wall?

Active LED Video Wall

Light-Emitting Diode is referred to as an LED. You can enjoy many advantages with active LED video walls. Active LED walls offer superior visual appeal, higher refresh rates, brighter outputs and contrast, viewing angles and wider colour gamuts, adaptable splicing, reduced moiré, faster switching, a longer product life, a slimmer form factor, and better performance overall when compared to LCD walls, their predecessors. Since they use less energy and have fewer environmental consequences during disposal, they are also comparatively safer for the environment.

Active LED video walls are LED panels tiled together to create an entirely seamless canvas as they don’t have bezels. Curved installations on vertical and horizontal surfaces are possible with flexible LED modules, providing more immersive and visually pleasing views.

LED display video walls are famous and helpful in most sectors. As a result, it aids in boosting consumer involvement for the company. With Active LED displays, there are countless options and marketing opportunities in today’s increasingly modern corporate world.

Traditional company strategies are becoming increasingly outmoded due to the expanding challenge and increased usage of innovation. All types of businesses can benefit from LED display marketing. To capture the interest of each potential business client, all you need is the ideal combination of creativity and motivation.

What should be considered before selecting the best active LED video wall?

Application

What is your application? Whom are you trying to reach? What information do you wish to hammer into the wall? In which location do you want to put this wall? Does it have to be portable, or will it be installed permanently? These are some questions you must decide on before moving forward.

Location

Where will the installation take place? Indoors or outdoors? The position is essential for an Active LED Video Wall. Your wall’s cost will depend on size, shape, viewing distance, pixel pitch, and resolution.

A significantly bigger pixel pitch (commonly known as “Standard Pitch”) should be enough if it is outdoors, the intended audience is farther away, and displaying a large, smooth image is crucial. However, under the light of solid ambient lighting or direct sunlight, it will necessitate more powerful LEDs. These outdoor Active LED video walls can be used as backdrops for live events or concerts, stadium scoreboards, outside storefront advertising, billboards, and transportation signage. They are also made to endure the elements.

The application will have the most significant impact on the pixel pitch and size, which together will determine the specification and, eventually, the cost of the wall if the installation is indoors. The choices are unlimited, whether the material requires close-up viewing in a boardroom or conference room or a large-size video wall erected in a corporate lobby, customer experience center, network operations centre, studio, auditorium, or cafeteria. Aside from Command and Control Centers, Flight Information Display Systems, Digital Signage applications, and even XR (Extended Reality) Studios for virtual creation in film and television, these video walls are also put in these locations.

Pixel Pitch

Choosing the pixel pitch is one of the most important considerations when choosing an Active LED Videowall. The distance in millimetres between the centres of two neighbouring LED pixels in an active LED module is known as pixel pitch, dot pitch, or pitch. Any two consecutive pixels on a video wall with a 1.5 millimetre (1.5 mm) pitch are physically separated by 1.5 mm. A narrower pixel pitch indicates less vacant space between pixels since it measures the distance between two neighbouring pixels. Pixel density, or the number of pixels on a particular screen surface, is determined by this. The ideal horizontal distance a viewer should be from the surface of the active LED wall to have a satisfying viewing experience is then determined by pixel density. As a general rule, the closer the viewing distance is, and vice versa, the smaller the pixel pitch. Active LED displays’ pixel pitch has an impact on both the perceived visual performance and viewing distance.

Since the real estate space is usually predetermined for the purpose in most applications, one strategy to maximise value for money when choosing an Active LED Videowall is to first calculate the ideal viewing distance and then choose the pixel pitch that would match that distance. In this manner, one would not waste time selecting a finer pixel pitch than necessary.

Image fidelity would be maintained at the ideal viewing distance from the wall. Still, if the viewer walked any closer, the image quality would suffer, or the screen would seem pixelated. The complexity of the content shown on the Active LED Videowall should also be carefully considered, as should the quality at which it would be suitably visible to the audience. What this means is:

Content

Content is crucial in determining the Active LED Videowall screen view. For instance, the wall would need to physically contain 8,294,400 pixels if the content was 4K (3840 by 2160). This would translate to a physical screen size of 19.72 feet by 11.1 feet, or 6.01 metres by 3.38 metres, using a 1.5 mm pixel pitch. The best viewing distance for this would be approximately 5.16 metres, or 16 feet.

Just as a point of comparison, the same 4K image can be achieved in a physical screen size of 11.84 feet by 6.68 feet, or 3.61 metres by 2.03 metres, should we choose to build the same 4K resolution wall with 0.9mm pixel pitch Active LED modules and because they would therefore be of higher pixel density. The ideal viewing distance for this is 10 feet, 1 inch, or 3.09 meters.

Size

Now that we have a general concept of size from the examples mentioned above, it is crucial to keep the available space for the intended use in mind while determining the size of an Active Video wall. Large Active LED walls are typically used outdoors where longer viewing distances can be tolerated, and wider pixel pitches may be used. As a result, they are typically less expensive than an interior LED wall of the same size with a higher pixel density or finer pitch.

Structure

Each Active LED video wall screen arrangement may differ depending on the location and application. It may involve a standard or custom frame mounting mechanism to ensure the frame’s structural integrity and, eventually, the video wall. While some manufacturers include this in their product line, others encourage systems integrators to create this structure specifically for the location. Factors like engineering precision, axes of adjustment possibilities, gauge and material quality, etc., would affect how the seamless canvas turned out. This can be expensive; thus, it should never be compromised.

Maintenance

Most manufacturers send Active LED modules from the same production batch to maintain uniformity of LED performance and colour for a given order of a specific Active LED video wall application. These are subject to earlier quality checks, frequently including burn-in tests to eliminate flaws before shipping. However, it is also observed that occasionally LED pixels are “dead” and require replacement or repair during an installation or immediately after. Many manufacturers provide the component-level capability of replacing a single pixel or a whole module. It is wise to account for some of these modules as spares since they are helpful for installation and subsequent maintenance.

Additionally, LED modules emit heat. Therefore, adequate planning should account for the strain on the air conditioner and ventilation. The lifespan of the Active LED video wall and the return on the consumer’s investment in the product are increased by maintaining ideal brightness, cooling, and dust-free conditions, among other things.

The benefits of an active LED video wall

  • Any size is custom-made. Seamless displays are available.
  • Perfect black may be achieved, which is not feasible with LCD screens.
  • LEDs are superior to LCD screens since they are lighter, thinner and weigh less because they don’t use bright light bulbs.
  • LEDs also assist in consuming less energy and saving a significant amount of energy.
  • LEDs enhance contrast and expand the range of colours to produce beautiful images.
  • LED display video walls can be architecturally designed to take hollow, curved, or oval shapes to improve the atmosphere and aesthetics.
  • The range of wavelengths used in lighting is so great that it provides high calibration.
  • The glint-free image produced by this LED screen reduces eye fatigue, eye strain, and headaches.
  • Compared to LCDs, they have a longer lifespan of up to 100,000 hours.
  • LED displays are easy to use and in good condition.
  • Highly effective in evoking a response and in managing their brightness and shading.
